Gluten-free, grain-free, and low carb “cloud bread” is one of those foods that sound too good to be true–like healthy cupcakes or chocolate cake that will help you get abs.

So, we had to investigate. Turns out this spongy loaf is made of eggs, cream cheese, cream of tartar and a little bit of honey (if you want to). Sounds…delicious?!?!

But is it nutritious? Registered dietitian Abby Langer explains. “ It’s fine to eat it every once in a while, but as a replacement for actual whole-grain bread, it fails miserably.”

Here’s why: Cloud bread contains cream cheese, which is high in saturated fat. And unlike whole-grain bread, it has no fibre and very few vitamins or minerals. “ Just because something is low-calorie, gluten-free, or carb-free, doesn’t mean it’s healthy or a good alternative,” says Langer. “Try to be more aware of the quality of the food you’re eating over and above the carb-free/paleo/low calorie designations. Food should be satisfying, not a punishment.”

Her recommendation: if you want to cut back on carbs, rid your diet of the refined sort – white rice, white bread, pasta, etc.
