How the ELLE Canada Team Practises Self-Care
Self-care is an important part of mental health, and it looks different for everybody — here's how the ELLE Canada team does it.

Vanessa Craft, Editor-in-Chief
“Dance classes are my meditation. Remembering the steps in such a tough workout takes all my concentration — I’m completely in the moment. Add in the loud music and camaraderie and I’m on a high afterwards.”
Jed Tallo, Art Director
“Taking pottery classes have really helped in my quest to slow down. It’s calming to work with my hands and be present at the wheel for three hours — no phone, no distractions, just me and a mound of clay.”
Elena Viltovskaia, Associate Art Director
“It is such a cliché, but getting enough sleep is the most important aspect of self-care for me. It affects my energy levels, my mood and even how hungry I get during the day.”
Carli Whitwell, Managing Editor
“I crave restorative alone time, so I try to sneak it in whenever possible—on the subway with a book, on a run at lunch, by avoiding calls after 9 p.m. (Sorry, Mom!) It gives me the time I need to reset so I’m actually excited to talk and hang with people.”
Ciara Rickard, Production and Copy Editor
“I go outside. Even though I live in the city, I try to find a little patch of wilderness to Zen out in or leave town and go for a hike. Being in nature always restores me a little.”
Victoria DiPlacido, Beauty Director
“I’m most productive in the morning, so I protect that time. Open offices can make it incredibly challenging to stay in the zone, especially if you need quiet to focus, so I start my day at 8 a.m. or earlier, before things get crazy.”
Erica Ngao, Fashion Editorial Assistant
“Every week, I challenge myself to make a new recipe. What started as an attempt to improve my cooking skills has turned into time that I can take to destress. I also blast music for very necessary kitchen karaoke sessions.”
Patricia Karounos, Editorial Assistant
“I block off time on Sunday nights to either read or watch Netflix — preferably with a face mask handy, of course — to prepare for the coming week. I also try to check social media less frequently throughout the weekend to take a step back from the constant updates.”
Meredith Hardie, Editorial Intern
“Sometimes when I have a day off, I don’t set an alarm and let myself sleep in until whenever. I used to feel guilty about this, but the rest makes me more productive in the long run.”
Claudia Wilde, Editorial Intern
“I love getting really dressed up, even if I’m not going anywhere important. I’ll sit on my bedroom floor in front of my full-length mirror with a cup of black tea and take my sweet, sweet time highlighting my cheek bones, curling my hair, moisturizing, etc. I don’t get to do it very often, so I really savour it when I can.”
Hannah-Gayle Jones, Art Intern
“I like to take some time out of my day to find a comfortable quiet space to record my goals — whether that’s making a vision board or journaling what I am grateful for. I think being grateful for what you have already is the true key to happiness.”
