We gathered a few of our favourite hair experts to fill us in on the cuts, colours and styles that will be big in 2019—and what they have seen enough of in 2018.

CROP THE LOB

“I think it’s time that we leave the shoulder-length A-line lob [see: above, left] in 2018 where it belongs and be brave with a shorter Parisian bob with cropped fringe for 2019 [see: above, right],” says Toronto and New York-based hairstylist Jason Lee. “I think the trend to cut your hair into a shoulder-length lob was a great way to go from really long to short, but it was a safe haircut for many and was considered easy to grow out. For 2019, committing to an even shorter, chicer bob is the way to go!”

ADD SOME LAYERS

“‘No’ to one-length hair in 2019, unless it’s past your collarbone—we are feeling layers this upcoming season,” says Marilisa, artistic director for Marc Anthony haircare. “Hair with a bit of layering (or a lot of layering), no matter the texture, has a way of moving that we love, especially in spring and summer when the weather is too yummy for staying in and blow-drying.”

CONSIDER FRINGE

“French girl bangs are in for 2019,” says Olivia Colacci, owner of Toronto’s Twentyseven salon. “They are grown out and perfectly parted down the centre. They just look effortlessly cool.”

WARM IT UP

“Gone is the trend of ashy grey blonde from 2018,” says Lee, noting that it can be harsh on the hair because of how much lifting is required to achieve the tone. “It’s time to warm things up with a balayage-inspired Miley Cyrus-esque camel-blonde for 2019. It’s about focusing on a more natural hue that is complimentary to skin tones.”

GO FOR NATURAL-LOOKING COLOUR

“White ends and dark roots is something we would love to wave goodbye to in 2019,” says Marilisa. “If you have darker hair and want to lighten up the ends, stay inside your family of colour. A light, warm chestnut or dark honey will highlight your eyes and keep your hair full of natural-looking shine.”

ADD AN ACCESSORY

“For 2019, we are going to go over the top with our accessories,” says Redken international artist Cindy Duplantis. “I am seeing velvet bows, scrunchies (which are here to stay) and definitely headbands with a lot of bling on them. You see it with designer clothing, everything is getting emblems and iron-ons. The same thing is happening with our hair.”
