Just because the runways were strewn with a bevy of frizzy-haired models (we’re looking at you Costume National, Cavalli, Oscar de la Renta and Philosophy) it doesn’t mean we want to (or should) take their lead in summer hair styles. Instead, we say opt for
pretty, polished summer hair – that’s not too styled and looks natural – minus the halo of frizz. What do you say? Will you join us?

1. Start in the shower

Most people think of fighting the frizz once the hair is towel-dried or even blow-dried. And let’s face it – that can be a never-ending battle in the likes of Game of Thrones. The key, says celebrity stylist and Herbal Essences spokesperson Charles Baker Strahan, is to start the minute you soak your locks in the shower. “Always hydrate,” he advises. “And hydration starts in the shower. You need something that really penetrates the hair and gives it that added moisture.”

2. Protect, protect, protect

Repeat the above phrase after us. This is your new summer mantra (after SPF, of course). Whether you’re a hair product fiend or not, summer is the most crucial time to apply some protective products to your hair, and it will help your anti frizz crusade. Creams, sprays and lotions will help smooth the hair and keep those frizzies away, but you’ll also want to invest in some great heat styling protection as well. “People often forget that summer (the heat, wind and sun) can rip open the hair cuticle,” explains celebrity hairstylist and Dove spokesperson Mark Townsend. “Use products that repair the hair from the inside, such as almond oil and coconut oil. You can use them every day and apply through damp hair with your fingers two to three inches away from your scalp.”

3. Creams are your new summer hair BFFs

When it comes to fighting frizz, nothing beats a cream to help smooth flyaways. “For
curly hair you’ll want a thicker cream for better treatment,” says Strahan. “For everyone else, an anti frizz cream with polymers that act as a buffer between you hair and the damaging elements.” Creams are best when used on damp hair that is then styled, but in a pinch you can use a small amount of cream in your fingers to help tame those strays.

4. Pick your battles

Some days it’s going to be 30-plus degrees and 90% humidity. You can’t fight Mother Nature. So rather than spending hours in the mirror at home hoping your AC doesn’t knock out while you blow dry your hair, opt to work with what’s natural. “You really need to embrace what you have,” says Strahan. “If it’s a bit frizzy today, think about a great,
messy updo. There are so many versions of the pony tail right now, and
hair accessories are always great to add to tame any imperfections.”

“Think Louis Vuitton’s messy French twists,” says Townsend. “Spritz your hair with tons of dry shampoo to create a piecey look that isn’t too ‘done’ looking.”

The final word of advice: Don’t forget to have fun and a great attitude, because more often than not, that messy twist you just threw up in a pinch will get you rave compliments at the office (thanks, Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton for the inspiration).
