Royals, they’re just like us…when it comes to the desire for a summer hair transformation. As COVID-19 restrictions begin to lift, many of us are getting back to the hair salon for our first hair cut and colour since mid-March – Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, included.

At the launch event for Tiny Happy People, a BBC platform providing resources and support to parents and carers of young children, Middleton was photographed with a new, lighter brunette look thanks to warm caramel-looking highlights. She also sported some face-framing layers.

Warm balayage is one of the biggest summer hair colour trends. “We have seen the end of the heavy ombré, where the roots are one colour and the ends are another,” Toronto-based hairstylist Jason Lee told us earlier this year. While ombré  is on its way out, warm shades and soft dimensions, which you can get with balayage, as seen on Middleton, are a way to add dimension to hair so it looks fresh, not flat. It could also be a subtle mood booster:  “Warmer tones can evoke happy emotions,” says hairstylist Luis Pacheco. “It’s brighter, it’s happier.”
