From the red carpet to the Spring 2012 runways,
sexy, tousled hair styles have been spotted everywhere. Not only is it a perfect date-night look, but it is also playful enough to wear year-round. The key to getting these touchable strands, no matter what your hair length or texture, starts with volume. We spoke with TRESemmé stylist Susana Hong to give us her tips on how to achieve hair styles that would turn Jennifer Aniston green with envy.

Start with clean hair

When it comes to getting voluminous hair, Hong prefers hair that is freshly washed. “It’s not always necessary depending on hair texture and thickness, but it does make for manageability and shine,” she explains. For those with a thicker hair texture, washing frequently isn’t necessary, so instead spray a dry shampoo onto your roots and use a blow dryer and paddle brush for some added lift.

Build volume

Not all of us are genetically blessed to have Giselle-like hair, but you can fake it with the right products. “I like to add products that will maintain the volume throughout the day like the TRESemmé 24hr root boosting spray,” says Hong. Freshly washed hair makes it easier to distribute the product throughout your hair. If your hair is long, fine and limp you’re best to start off with a volumizing mousse. “Apply it to damp hair, then blow dry upside down focusing on lifting the roots with your brush and blow dryer,” explains Hong. “This not only adds volume to the hair and roots, but it will also add hold when adding curls or waves with an iron.”

Use a diffuser

For those super sexy, just-out-of-bed beach waves, you will want to dry your hair with a diffuser. Hong likes to prep hair with a serum to prevent frizz, then start blow-drying hair upside down scrunching hair with your hand. If you don’t have a diffuser, you can also blow dry on a low setting, suggests Hong. After hair is dry, shake it out gently. “I also like to add a few controlled waves by wrapping random sections of hair around a 1" curling iron,” says Hong. “Make sure to not to curl the ends too much to avoid a ‘ringlet’ type curl.” For more of a beach texture, you can finish off with a dry shampoo.

Short and sexy

You can still achieve a gorgeous, sexy mane without having long locks. “I love tousled bouncy hair for bobs or shoulder length hair,” admits Hong. “It’s a great alternative to the straighter styles that are common with this length.” After applying an anti-frizz serum to hair, start blow-drying locks with a jumbo round vent brush. Once hair is dry and smooth, Hong says to take medium sized Velcro rollers (about 1" – 1 1/4") and wrap 1/4" thick sections of hair around the rollers. Let sit for about 20 minutes, then take the rollers out and spray with hairspray. “This will give you shiny, voluminous, bouncy yet tousled hair with tons of movement that looks super sexy and fun,” says Hong.
