BIG CHANGE: High-impact red

This bold hue is having a pop-culture moment thanks to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Anne of Green Gables and the X-Files reboot. It’s also the model statement shade as seen on runway vets Karen Elson, Rianne van Rompaey and Madison Stubbington.

HOW-TO: Confidence is key to pulling off this look-at-me shade. “You have to wear it and not let it wear you,” says Luis Pacheco, colourist and owner of Toronto’s Medulla & Co. He suggests adding tone-on-tone dimension to locks using freehand balayage hair painting.

LOW-RISK CHANGE: A colour refresh

Try the cool kid of hair colour: écaille, or tortoiseshell. This insouciant mélange of golden blond and honey highlights and caramels is fall’s answer to ombré.

HOW-TO: Ask for a combo of babylights (thin strands of highlight) and balayage (focused around the face) for a blended look, says London-based Jack Howard, official colourist for Next Model Management. Keep tones in the same family and only a few hues lighter or darker.

Redken Metal Fix 08 ($25), at drugstores and mass-market retailers.
Schwarzkopf Professional BlondMe Keratin Restore Blonde Conditioner
($17.95), at select Schwarzkopf Professional salons.

ZERO RISK: Temporary sparkle

If your length and colour are on lock for life, update your look with statement accessories.

HOW-TO: At Dolce & Gabbana, Guido Palau, global creative director for Redken, pinned hair into loose chignons, spritzed on finishing spray for texture (try Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Two-Day Extender) and then added jewellery. “It’s not perfect, and the accessories aren’t perfect, but that’s what gives the look its charm,” he said of the romantic, super-feminine style.

Chanel CC hairpin ($700), at chanel.com. Sephora barrettes ($10 each), at sephora.com.
