THEN: Back in ’95, the trend was foil highlights, says Susan Carter, portfolio colourist with L’Oréal Professionnel. “She’s a natural deep blonde,” says Carter of Alicia Silverstone, the actress who plays Cher in Clueless. “Remember when they used to use the little crochet hook to pull through those cap highlights? It could very well be that, because the highlights were so fine and it gives a very general overall blond glow.”

NOW: “What makes [Cher’s look] so special for now is – what we’re seeing a lot on the cover of magazines and definitely [on people] in North America – is still that depth at the re-growth,” explains Carter. “So that’s where the whole trend is right now – it’s just that we’re doing it on purpose. For [Cher], I feel like she just had re-growth, like she had highlights done two months before and they grew out a little bit. She’s a nice sandy dirty blond anyway, so it’s completely believable – it works.”

NOW: (continued) “Now what we’re doing is we’re purposely creating that look [of re-growth]. I’ll have a client come in, and I’ll do exactly what they did with her hair: I’ll do finely woven highlights, but then I’ll take a gloss, which is like a semi-permanent hair colour, and I’ll go about two shades deeper at the re-growth, just to create a very soft beginning of the highlight; to make it look kind of grown out.”

THEN: An updo is, like, totally classic. It dates at least back to the ’70s.

NOW: Update the look with an updo that’s a little less piecey and a little more sculpted, à la Chanel F/W 2015.

THEN: Headbands – great then, and they’re totally still a thing today.

NOW: Embrace Cher’s affinity for the hair accessory, but wear it a little closer to the hairline like at Fendi’s F/W 2015 show. For Cher-level volume, Louis Hechter, hairstylist and editorial director for L’Oréal Professionnel, recommends separating hair in nine equal pieces then blow-drying at a 90-degree angle from the roots. “I would suggest you put some mousse into the hair for volume,” says Hechter. “After you blow dry each piece, roll it into your fingers and pin curl it.” Try L’Oréal Professionnel Full Volume Extra Strong Hold Volume Mousse by Tecni.Art ($23) at professional salons.
