Pure thing
Two tree-hugging hairstylists on how to green your hair routine:

• Get the right cut for your hair type and face shape, says Mario Verrilli, creator of Saijojo hair products. This will shorten the time you spend on heat-styling, which reduces the amount of energy you use.

• Even if a product says it’s “green” or “natural,” it doesn’t mean it is, warns Jonathan Antin, the celebrity stylist behind the Green Rootine hair collection. Read the ingredient list, and look for formulas that are paraben-, sulfate- and petrochemical-free.

• Prolonged exposure to heat can decrease the shelf life of natural products, so store them in a place with a normal to cool temp, says Antin.

Energy plan
If you fire up your flat iron 365, consider swapping it with an energy-saving alternative. Each item in Vidal Sassoon’s EcoStyle line uses 35 percent less power than other heat-styling tools, so they’ll shave digits off your electricity bill. And, even though they cut back on kilowatts, they aren’t short on bells and whistles — the blow-dryer dries hair faster than trad types and has a cold air option to lock in shine, while the flat iron’s easy grip and extra-long ceramic plates ensure a frizz-free finish.

Good night
The All Nighter Styling Powder will keep your blowout looking fluffy and fresh from sunset well into brunch the next day. Offered in six shades to match every hair colour, this talc- and aluminum-free formula with natural oil absorbers like pure rice and tapioca starch comes in a tiny bottle with a baby-powder-like dispenser so it’s easy to tote. (Just ask Penélope Cruz and Rachel Zoe.) Before you head out, set your style with a mist of Kevin Murphy’s carbon-neutral Session.Spray — for every can you buy, a donation is sent to a certified carbon-reduction program.

In treatment

After becoming the It skin-care ingredient, argan oil is now being hailed as a fix for fried hair too. Vegan brand Live Clean has harvested the vitamin-E-rich tonic from Morocco for its new collection, which includes a silicone-free treatment to restore shine. For colour-treated heads, Matrix’s Ecocert-approved conditioning oil mixes argan with Amazon-grown açaí berry to smooth damaged cuticles and block free radicals.
