Natalie Portman hit the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday night for the North American premiere of buzzy music drama Vox Lux. We spoke to celebrity hairstylist Bridget Brager, who worked with Portman for the event, about how to get the actress’ “soft and romantic” waves. See her keys for success, below.

Prep is critical.

“I cannot express the importance of a great foundation. [The right] shampoo and conditioner are key for a gorgeous hairstyle. My go-to is the new Herbal Essences Bio Renew Black Charcoal. It’s a complete detox for the hair and scalp, especially before a big event. Then I used the new T3 Cura Luxe blow dryer for a silky smooth blow out.”

Concentrate the curl at the end of the hair.

“Once her hair was dry, I set 1-inch sections using the T3 Twirl Trio curling iron with the 1.25″ clip barrel. I started at the ends, so most of the action was happening below. Once all the hair was curled and set, I rubbed a small amount of styling cream between my palms and used it to break up the curls from roots to ends.”

Brush it out.

“To finish, I used my boar bristle Mason Pearson brush (a staple in my hair kit) to brush everything smooth and create a slight side part. When every hair was placed, I finished with a spritz of hair spray.”
