While we’re tempted to apply the out-with-the-old mantra to our beauty bag each season, there are some summer beauty products that we’re not ready to part with just yet—and we don’t have to. When it comes to switching up our makeup bag to try out fall beauty looks, “You really don’t have to change up that much,” says Brittany Gray, a Toronto-based celebrity makeup artist and owner of Fancy Face Inc. We asked Gray to share her expert end-of-season makeup bag transition tips and the beauty products to keep, toss and replace for fall.

Summer beauty: What to keep

All summer we’ve been after that fresh, dewy look of glowing skin, says Gray. And come time for cooler temperatures, that doesn’t have to change—despite the matte, velvety finish to skin seen on the Fall 2013 runways. “With the monochromatic tone, skin doesn’t look as alive as it does in the summer,” she says. Keep that dewy glow by using a hydrating primer, like Benefit Cosmetics Stay Flawless 15-hour Primer. “Just apply to areas where you need it—the centre of the nose, cheeks, middle of the forehead.” Add a highlighter overtop cheekbones and dust with bronzer to create dimension. “For a perfect segue into fall, continue to use radiance-boosting foundation,” says Gray, who loves YSL Touch Éclat and Chanel’s Vita Lumière.

BEAUTY TIPS: Your ON-THE-GO makeup routine

Look for double-duty skin care products to save time during your morning beauty routine this fall. “Apply Hourglass’ Primer Serum at Sephora before your foundation or BB/CC cream,” says Gray. “It gives skin a beautiful luminosity and really plumps it up.”

Summer beauty: What to toss
Here’s the thing about beauty trends: they work best when applied in moderation and are tailored to your personal style. While our beauty products this summer were all about eye liner trends in electric hues and soft, pretty blush tones of pink and peach, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to give these up after Labour Day. “Look at the trends but see what brings out your best features,” she advises. Then apply accordingly.

Summer beauty: What to replace
Now, the fun part—mixing in the rich berry hues and deep chocolate shades of the season to your fall makeup bag. For the eyes, “choose an eye liner colour that really intensifies your natural eye colour,” says Gray. Black and brown liners— though always classic options—tend to create a harsh definition around the eye. Opt for berry or honey tones to create an interesting look this season. For a flush of raspberry around the eye lid, try Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Crayon Eyeliner in Jazz.

BEAUY TRENDS: Fall 2013’s PRETTIEST EYES

The monochromatic look—honey, chocolate and cranberry smoky eyes with a muted lip—was also huge for fall (seen at Gucci and Elie Saab). Punch up the lips with a wine or berry stain. Expert beauty trick? “Dab lipstick on cheeks to bring out the colour on your lips, and for a perfect match,” says Gray. Or use a cream-based blush in a petal or berry shade and dab onto lips.

For your on-the-go beauty maintenance, toss a compact translucent powder into your purse (like Laura Mercier Pressed Setting Powder), to reduce shine throughout the day. Just be sure to switch up your set of makeup brushes—try Real Technique by makeup artist Samantha Chapman.

When it comes to your beauty look for fall—as always—pick your favourite trends and beauty products and keep it simple. “All if you need is lip gloss, mascara and blush to look like a million bucks!” says Gray.
