Few beauty products have truly stood the test of time throughout the decades and fewer still have managed to repeatedly capture the attention of multiple generations. But in an impressive feat Clinique created a viral universally flattering lip shade before anyone knew what viral meant.

Black Honey was first released in 1971 as a sticky gloss in a glass pot as part of a “Honeys” collection before being re-released as balmy formula in a tube in 1989 which is where the obsession really began. The dark berry shade is the only one of the “Honeys” from the collection to live on as the Black Honey Almost Lipstick we recognize today. The sheer buildable finish and vampy red and purple undertones make it adaptive to multiple skin tones which is likely why people keep returning to it in an age of newness and trend cycles.

Molly Ringwald used Black Honey in The Breakfast Club to demonstrate how she could apply it using only her cleavage, Liv Tyler wore a swipe of the iconic shade on her lips as the ethereal Arwen throughout the Lord of the Rings trilogy and it’s been worn by multiple celebrities throughout the 90s and early 2000s.

In more recent years the TikTok girlies have rediscovered Black Honey as part of their obsession with all things Y2K and in a testament to their buying power, have sold out the Almost Lipstick multiple times.

Clinique

In response to the resurgence in Black Honey’s popularity, Clinique has decided to release a new limited-edition lineup inspired by the popular shade. The collection features a Black Honey mascara and–capitalizing on another popular trend–a lip and cheek oil.

The mascara is Clinique’s most popular formula and leaves a subtle pop of brown on the lashes with a berry undertone. The matching lip and cheek oil contains conditioning safflower, jojoba, sunflower and olive oils and glides on with a pillowy doe foot applicator.

Both products are available online and at Shoppers Drug Mart beginning June 15 while supplies last.
