Photography by Giuliano Bekor (Nina Dobrev) & Geoffrey Ross (products)

She has played a teen mom and a sophomore torn between two vampire paramours on TV, but Nina Dobrev insists that her own high-school experience was much less dramatic. "I was a good student," she says, laughing, "and I was kind of a jock. I played every single sport you can think of." The 22-year-old Bulgarian-born, Toronto-raised actress graduated from a performing-arts academy in 2007, which she attended while playing spunky single mother Mia Jones on Degrassi: The Next Generation. Soon after, she was scooped up by the CW network for a star-making turn as Elena Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries. With her wide eyes, dark features and youthful charm, Dobrev is the perfect muse for our yearbook flashback on back-to-school beauty.

Get the look:

• "I love a pop of colour, and purple lips are both unexpected and fun. Even though it’s bright, this look is still very wearable," says makeup artist Kayleen McAdams.

• "Apply lipstick with a stiff lip brush. Begin in the centre of your lips and blend colour outwards."

• "Instead of lipliner, blur the edges with a cotton swab or sponge to create a soft lip line. If you’re intimidated by lipstick, work up to the look with a bright-purple gloss."

REBEL ROCKER

Rebel-Rocker.jpgNARS Lipgloss in Orgasm ($28); Lancôme Ombre Magnetique in Black Macadam ($47); M.A.C Eye Kohl in Smolder ($17.50); Rimmel London Soft Kohl Kajal Eye Liner Pencil ($6).

Get the look:

• "This look is all about eyeliner. You don’t want the shape to be winged or cat-eyed; instead, follow the lash line to rim your eyes," says McAdams.

• "Don’t worry about being too precise: The look is tough and a little rocker, and you want the liner to look messy and disheveled."

• "Choose an eyeliner that is either waterproof or chalky in texture; a creamy formula won’t have the staying power."

Get the look:

• “The focus is on healthy, glowing skin—no heavy makeup,” says McAdams.

• “After prepping your skin, use two different blushes to give your face a fresh flush.”

• “Sweep a peach shade along temples, cheekbones and lightly over your forehead, nose and chin to define features and add warmth to your face.”

• “Then, apply a bright-pink blush to the apples of your cheeks to instantly brighten your complexion.”

FEMME FATALE

BEAUTY-NINA-3-EC0911.jpgM.A.C Zoom Fast Black Lash Mascara in B69 ($16.50); NARS Lip Lacquer in Chlesea Girls ($28); Chanel Eye Liner in Gris Scintillant ($25); CoverGirl Eye Enhancer 1-Kit Eye Shadow in Tapostry Taupe ($5).

Get the look:

• "Keep your lips feminine with a sheer nude or pinky gloss and play up dramatic eyes," says McAdams.

• "Apply a pencil liner along the lash line and layer a powder eyeshadow on top to guarantee that it will last all day-and night."

• "Fill in your upper lash line with individual false lashes; they look more natural than a full strip. Begin at the outer corner of the eye and work your way inwards, applying lashes as close to your natural lash line as possible."

• "Tilt your head backwards so you can see where to place the lashes. Switch from medium to short lashes near the centre of the eye for a full yet natural effect."
