Charmaine Cooper, education manager for Dermalogica Canada, tells us the right way to moisturize in the summer – and why you don’t need to give up your favourite luxe oil!

Why is it important to continue to hydrate skin in the summer?

It is critical to use hydrating ingredients right through the summer due to the increased humidity in the air.  Even though we want to strip down to the bare minimum in the summer, if we do not give the skin the adequate levels of water that it needs, many times, the skin will over compensate with producing higher levels of oil. This will cause added problems within the skin. Achieving balance between oil and moisture, truly is the key.

What changes, if any, do we need to make to our choice of moisturizers in the summer?

During the summer, it is ideal to adjust to a lighter weight moisturizer.  Consider going with [one] that contains cooling cucumber, hyaluronic acid and vitamins E and C to help repair and shield the skin. Many great summer moisturizers also contain SPF to help shield the skin against further damage from being outdoors more.

Can we continue to use our beloved facial oils in the summer?

Natural oils such as argan oil and rosehip have phenomenal properties to support healthy skin, in all seasons! Argan helps to restore skin health while rosehip encourages natural cell renewal for a healthy glow. These are actions that we certainly want to encourage in the summer as dull, dehydrated skin can creep up rather quickly with more UV ray exposure. Use these repairing oils at nighttime as the skin regenerates while we sleep. Use water-locking ingredients by day to help prevent dehydration. When the season gets cold again, using these skin-friendly oils can be great to further help to nourish the skin throughout the day in assaultive weather.
