Brace yourselves: YouTube Rewind’s annual roundup of the most-liked beauty videos on its platform is here, and gasp, Kylie Jenner didn’t take the crown. 

Youtube Rewind spans several categories, including beauty, choreography, music videos and video games. The list is a window into the viewing habits of YouTubers, and can look somewhat bizarre considering the expansive range of users on the platform (YouTube has 1.9 billion users worldwide; that’s a LOT of different interests.) 

The beauty community on YouTube is its own beast. With its own fanbase and plethora of exaggerated expressions, inter-YouTuber feuds and addictive lipstick-melting videos, there’s an entire universe of beauty content being gobbled up internationally. 

What could be more interesting than watching James Charles apply makeup en español? Next to nothing, according to YouTube Rewind. Receiving the top spot this year with 1.6 million likes (and those stats don’t hold a candle to his most-viewed videos), the beauty influencer is without a doubt a celebrity in his own right. 

The ever-expanding world of YouTube beauty content has led to huge brand collaborations, namesake beauty lines and multi-million dollar salaries. Content creators need not be Calabasas-based celebs to amass fanbases worldwide, although Kylie Jenner and Kylie Jenner-related videos still snatched up two spots on the top five. (Here’s hoping 2020 has a bit more variety.)
