Bra basics: Find the right fit for your shape!

Plunging necklines are daring and sexy. But before you choose a deep v-neck, check in with your underpinings to make sure they're not undermining your hot new look.

Bra basics: Find the right fit for your shape!

Over 85% of women are reportedly wearing the wrong bra size for their body type. Could you be one of them? With the help of Amy Wong, spokesperson for Fit Fully Yours bras, we list the top bra-blunders women make and our fast-fix solutions.

1. Cups are too small. Don't pull a Pam Anderson in your white tee by sporting a bra that makes it look like you're carring 4 not 2. "Women often have the misconception that a larger cup size denotes they are over-weight," says Wong. "Your breasts should fill the cup, but not spill over."

2. Band size is too big or too small. Use this rule of thumb everytime you go lingerie shopping: The centre of the bra should always be flat against the breast bone. Women either have a bra band that is too large -- it sits well below the shoulder blades pushing your breasts to your waist à la Grandma -- or too small -- back-fat anyone? "Have someone measure around your chest with a tape measure just under your breasts," says Wong. "Add 5 inches to your measurement and that is your band/chest size."

3. Buying pretty bras with no support. We've all done it -- Our senses are aroused by all the lacy confections from La Perla and the ultra-girly underpinings at Lejaby. But if the support isn't there, then the point is lost. "Being comfortable is sexy," says Wong. "You can combine both style and function in your lingerie wardrobe. Know your body type and be proud of it!" One key element? Seek out bras that have underwires for that extra oomph!

4. Not having enough bras for the outfit and ocassion. Tired of hiding your bra strap under that cute little camisole? Go shopping. Not every bra is going to work with every outfit. Like good bags and footwear, you should invest in your lingerie collection. Buy key pieces that will work on a myriad of fashion styles: Jersey dresses, halter tops, traditional blouses etc. "A proper bra will help you appear slimmer and therefore more confident," says Wong.

5. No overflowing cups
Bras that are too small in the cup area will compress your breasts and force them to bulge out of the bra. Likewise, bras that are too large will wrinkle and look bulky under your clothes so it's imperative you find the proper cup size!

The most common method in sizing yourself correctly is to use a tape measure. When you run the tape measure around your body, you're going to take the measurement across the fullest part of your breasts. Write this number down. Now, subtract your chest measurement (To get your proper chest measurement, run the tape measure just under your breasts, all the way around your back and rib cage. The tape measure should rest flat on your skin and lie straight across your back -- not too tight that it digs in nor too lose that it droops down in back. Make note of this measurement and add 5 inches. That is your chest size/measurement.).

If the difference between the two numbers is less than 1 inch, your cup size is AA. If it's 1 inch, your cup size is A; 2 inches, you're a B; 3 inches you're a C, and so on.

6. No pain ... ever. If your bra is bunching, pushing or pinching in any way on your body, it's not working for you. A perfect fit should feel as though it's not even there. Panty-lines and digging bra straps begone!

ok,, thanks for the info. But, do you do your initial measuring **with or without** a bra on?
With age the breasts aren't as 'perky' and this could make a big diff in the measurements taken.

Go to a proper lingerie shop that specializes only in underwear, and I don't mean La Senza or Le Vin Rose. The people who work in those shops are trained in fitting you properly.

I do fittings and I rarely add 5 inches to the measurement to get the band size - 2-3 inches is plenty. The cup size is sometimes hard to measure because of placement of the breasts at the time of measuring so trying on is always best. One important thing to know, because bras can fit differently if you wear a 36DD in one brand/style you possibly could be a 38D in another or on the smaller scale a 34F in another. There are simple tests to do to know if you bra fits well.

This calculation doesn't work for me. I measure 29 inches under my breast which equals to 34... which seems correct, but when I measure around the fullest part of my breast it equals out to 35. I am definitely not a 34A, but when I do the subtraction this is what it converts to.

okay so wat you do if you do not want to be proffesionally sized at your lingerie store is, take a measuring tape and wrap it right under your bust, if the number is even add 4 if it is odd add 5. then measure around the fullest part of your bust. if the difference between the first number and the second is less than 1 inch AA, 1 inch A, 2 inches B, 3 inches C, etc. and make sure that when your are measure the tape is not digging in but it is not so loose that it sags or falls.

Colleen, from what i understand, you should be wearing a 38D, not a 36DD. try it and see if it's any better.

    measure around your rib cage.
say you measure a 36, that is your band size.
then measure the largest point..usually where youe nipples are, all the way around..
for every extra inch on top of the 36in band size, is an extra cup size up.
so if you are a 36 band and then you measure as a 40 at the largest point then you are a 36D.

I used to work at La senza and that is how we were taught. I was also a bra specialist and have found hundreds of ladies the right bra!

I dont understand bra sizes period..one brand fits me best as a 34A, yet another brand fits me just as well as a 32B, I dont understand that sort of variance! WHAT AM I?? There is no way that my chest size is the same size as my bust size, why do they make you add 5 to the chest size? its not fair to small breasted women such as myself, there must be a better way of sizing bras for woman without making the small breasted woman feel like they have nothing to show!

I have worked in a professional lingerie store and the best way to fit a bra is not to use a tape measure. A tape measure does not take into accomadation drop of the breast or where the breast tissue lies on our chest. It is best to be fit by using a fitting bra and by someone who knows how a bra should fit and what style would suit you best.
