Fall 2006 beauty trends report

Foxy brown
This minimalist look is a nod to the early '90s, says Jacquie Hutchinson, national product trainer and makeup artist for Revlon Canada. Use a sponge to pat on semi-matte foundation. Dab concealer around the eyes to lighten shadows. Set with a loose powder. Apply a taupe powder blush to the hollow of the cheekbones and blend. Highlight the eyes, from lashes to brows, with an ivory shadow, then layer a bronze shade over the lids. "For added depth, apply black liquid liner at the roots of the upper lashes, using the side of the applicator in a back-and-forth motion," says Hutchinson. Opt for a dark-brown liner under the eyes, curl the lashes and coat with a lengthening mascara. To open and lift the eyes, apply a tinted brow gel and brush brows up toward the temples. Lighten the lips with concealer, then fill them in with a taupe liner. Finish with a matching lipstick.

"For the [Proenza Schouler] show, I was inspired by those iconic Linda Evangelista photographs taken by Peter Lindbergh, the ones where her eye makeup is softly smudged and her lips are beautifully stained. I didn't want any hard lines."
--Gucci Westman, international artistic director, Lancôme

Silver-plated
If John Galliano's Wild West diva is not your style, Grace Lee, a M.A.C Pro Team senior artist, points to Alexander McQueen's more romantic, ethereal version of this metallic-silver look. (See image at left.) Brush a pale liquid foundation on moisturized skin. "Start with the forehead and blend, using downward strokes," says Lee. Opt for a soft-pink cream blush and blend it into the hollow of the cheekbones. Highlight the top of the cheekbones in shimmering silver. "This look is all about contouring with colour and highlighting in silver but in new areas -- not just the cheekbones but down the bridge of the nose and in the bow of the lip." For the eyes, mix silver highlighting powder with grey shadow and a touch of lavender. "Place the colour on the upper and lower lash lines and blend for a soft, diffused look." Dab a raspberry lipstick at the centre of the lips and blend out. "It should look like you've been eating a purple Popsicle."
"The look [in the John Galliano show, as at left] was Gothic American Wild West -- think Civil War meets Marilyn Manson. We mixed purples and tons of greys all around the eyes, plus white mascara to create a big, smoky eye. The girls looked amazing!"

Blue velvet
This uptown, Gothic look is all about a clean face and powerful eyes, says Rimmel beauty expert Paul Venoit. (See image at left, from the Christian Dior show.) The more wearable version, seen at the Donatella Versace show (below left), uses a light liquid foundation brushed over the entire face, including the eyelids, to remove excess oil. Set with a loose powder and finish with a touch of soft-pink powder blush. For the eyes, sweep a light-blue shadow over the lid and blend under the lower lashes. Add purple shadow in the crease and extend halfway along the lower lash line, blending in an upward "V." Mix a matte black shadow with the purple and blue and apply along the top and bottom lash lines. Curl the lashes and coat with mascara. To keep brows natural and strong, feather in colour with a brow pencil where needed and set with gel. Lips are purply beige and quite matte. Dab on lipstick with a finger.
"Donatella loves a dark eye. She wanted it to be smoky and jewelled. She used a beautiful midnight-blue fabric in her collection, which influenced the makeup. We went for a rich, sumptuous, almost-wet look."

Cardinal rules
The Behnaz Sarafpour show (below left) marked the return of the classic rouged lip. First, prepare the skin with a semi-matte foundation, says Kirk Brierley, Elizabeth Arden's manager of education and communication. Start at the centre of the face and blend out with a brush. Dab on concealer where needed, then warm up the contours of the cheeks with a pink blush. Sweep pink shadow on the eyelids, and layer a plum shade in the crease. To get the upside-down winged eye seen at Valentino's show (left), apply dark-grey shadow with an angled brush along the lower lash line. "A wet brush gives the colour more intensity and staying power," says Brierley. Line the lips in red, and use a brush to fill in the entire mouth with a matching red lipstick. No powder is necessary. "Formulations today are moisturizing and long-lasting," says Brierley.
"When I saw the velvet dresses in the Behnaz Sarafpour collection, I thought of Snow White with her pale complexion and red lips. Behnaz wanted two things: matte skin and a bold mouth. We worked to create a wearable red lipstick, then I powdered the lip a bit because I wanted the whole look to be matte."
