One-on-one with Lucian Matis

Describe your inspiration for the collection. "Inspiration is a funny word. It usually means that I had a direction when I started this season, which is really not true. Each season I like to challenge myself, and this season I decided to stray from the path and try to develop some of my own fabrics. I experimented with a bit of custom printing, dabbled in some beautiful appliqué work and had a hand at some custom beading. I threw in some experimentation with dress form and structure, chopped up some beautiful fabrics, relied on some very talented seamstresses, and it all culminated in the Lucian Matis Spring/Summer 2016. A beautiful experiment." READ MORE: The surprising pant style that will be everywhere this spring

Did you try a new technique or approach to designing at any point during the process? "So many, too many, in the end maybe not enough, but that’s what next season is for. As I said this season I dabbled. I loved designing the beading but I think my absolute favorite technique was the combination of custom printed silk and appliques on illusion mesh. I wanted the illusion of nakedness seductively covered by beautiful flowers. I also loved creating the prints this season. I had a lot of fun playing with colour and bold contrasts." What kind of mood did you want to create with the collection? "Mood(y). A single mood does not carry a collection. Lucian Matis is curated for the diverse women who has [many] moods, and knows how to use them. There are pieces for when you’re light and airy, full of spring; then there are moods for when you’re the dark cloud on the horizon, sexy and seductive. Pick your mood; then pick your dress." What’s the one thing when it comes to dressing that you would like to see women embrace? "I would love women to care as much about the quality and the locale of a garment’s creation as the label affixed to it." READ MORE: Spring 2016 jewellery trends to try before everyone else

What’s the most unexpected element about your collection? "I think that the most surprising element is black for spring/summer. Most people disregard black as a not a spring or summer colour. They forget that some of the most memorable summer moments are the storms." READ MORE: 50 best flats under $200

Is there a unique story behind any of your pieces in the collection? Or if any one piece in the collection could talk, what would it say? "I went on vacation this summer to my partner’s family, while there I noticed that one of his family members had a large dragonfly on her dress hem. It was just clinging there, melding into the tapestry and I was mesmerized by its beauty. I needed to recreate that moment in the collection; which lead to the pieces with the geometric bug beading."
