Summer 2011: Denim

Inspired by the varying looks on the Spring 2011 fashion runways, we chat with Fidelity Denim owner Jason Trotzuk who says finding the ultimate pair of denims isn’t about bemoaning the shape you don’t have; instead, celebrating the one you do.

Here, his no-nonsense advice on the styles for our body types. Read on: a pair of vintage flares may be in your future.

Athletic build: A trouser works best; it provides ample room in the upper legs and extra width at the hem.

Pear-shaped: Styles that are more relaxed through the hip and thigh, so opt for a boot cut. Perfect choice.

Hourglass: Higher-waisted is where it’s at! The cut will fit snug around the waist and hips and you will avoid that dreaded gap in the back. A flared leg or boot cut will provide that balance to your silhouette.

Boyish: Flares and wide-legs create a curvaceous shape and a higher waist will accentuate your existing curves nicely. Don’t drown what shape you have in a boyfriend jean!

Curvy: Avoid lower-waisted styles as it could be a factor in that dreaded “muffin top” we hear far too much about. Your objective is to create that balanced silhouette. Styles with a fitted waist and extra room in the hips.

Petite: Most women are concerned with lengthening their legs, so straight-leg all the way: They are the most elongating jean style there is.

Plus-size: A mid-to-high rise will fit best to be sure there is no gapping at the back waist. Traditionally dark rinses give the best look, as well as looking for fabrics that have a bit of stretch to them. Not only will the up the comfort-factor, but they skim your body in a very flattering way.
