In fashion, like life, nothing beautiful and worthwhile comes easy. So when we fell for the top spring runway trends—slouchy sportswear and ’90s-inspired graphic tees are a just a few that come to mind—we knew that it would take some serious sartorial know-how to pull off these looks well. To help take these styles from the runways to the streets, we consulted Deborah Ferguson, New York-based celebrity and fashion stylist, for her savvy style tips on how to rock the trickiest spring trends like a pro.
Spring fashion trend: ’90s logo T-shirt
Spring 2014 runway inspiration: Alexander Wang, Moschino, Undercover
How to wear it: “Nineties oversized logo T-shirts work well with baggy boyfriend jeans by Acne and or a high-waisted slim cut by Stella McCartney,” says Ferguson. “I like the oversized sweatshirts and tops with fun bold logos that Undercover presented for Spring/Summer 2014 in Paris, as they are both a day look or easily worn as a cocktail look with a leather pencil skirt and leather skinny pants with chunky ankle boots or heels by Marni or Pierre Hardy.”

Spring fashion trend: Oversized sunglasses
Spring 2014 runway inspiration: Miu Miu, Prabal Gurung, 3.1 Phillip Lim
How to wear it: “My favourite for Spring/Summer 2014 are by Miu Miu, as they can soften any harder-edge look with the bright and oversized doll-like frames—and they work best with long straight hair. Prabal Gurung’s Spring/Summer 2014 frames work well with shorter hair and if I wanted to make a strong statement, I would pair them with a low-key casual outfit.”

Spring fashion trend: Overalls
Spring 2014 runway inspiration: DKNY, Rag & Bone, Balmain
How to wear it: “Always pair with a chunky ankle boot,
brogue or heel,” says Ferguson. “And layer with an oversized silk blouse and top with a cropped bomber jacket, which is a great way to re-interpret the 1980s Buffalo girl trend that I love.”
TRY: Citizens of Humanity acid washed denim overalls ($695), at stylebop.com.
Spring fashion trend: Sportswear
Spring 2014 runway inspiration: Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger, Victoria Beckham
How to wear it: “Go for the Gucci Spring/Summer 2014 version as soft, flowing fabrics for the
slouchy pant trend are one of my favorites, and are ideal for the season. They can be paired with an oversized silk or cotton tank top. Add in a large silk or unlined version of a bomber or varsity jacket and stiletto heels to give it a sexy day-to-night look à la Helmut Newton woman.”
TRY: Harlow varsity bomber ($545), at whistles.co.uk.
Spring fashion trend: Mules
Spring 2014 runway inspiration: Céline, Acne, Proenza Schouler, Chloé
How to wear it: “
Chunky heeled mules are great for adding a slightly harder edge to a softer silhouette: try a long, flowing dress or silk layers as per Chloé’s Spring/Summer 2014 runway collection,” says Ferguson. “Mules can also work with wide-legged or cropped pants, which is a strong trend for spring.”
TRY: Fendi Jungle Bicolor Patent Leather Mules ($945), at saksfifthavenue.com.
