Louis Vuitton has a long record of art-world collaborations. There was the ongoing partnership with Takashi Murakami, which brought us those iconic cherry blossom motifs and multicoloured monograms. More recently, the house collaborated with Cindy Sherman on a travelling case. Now, Louis Vuitton has tapped contemporary art superstar Jeff Koons to lend his hand to a range of bags and accessories, which will launch on April 28th.

For this collab, Koons’ “Grazing Ball” series—large scale reproductions of iconic masterworks—has made its way onto some familiar styles. Da Vinci’s The Mona Lisa graces the Speedy and Peter Paul Rubens’ Tiger Hunt covers the the Neverfull. Each bag is finished with a tag in the shape of Koons’ iconic inflatable rabbit and the inside of each bag features a biography and portrait of the original artist whose work Koons has reproduced.

The reproductions-of-reproductions theme is about as meta as it gets, but the collaboration offers a commentary on the ongoing cycle of inspiration and reinterpretation in art—and, we’d argue, in fashion. See the pieces below.
