It’s the season of the stylist: Here's how to master fall 2015's complicated runway looks

Fall/winter 2015 has ushered in a brand-new dressing game: A gaggle of colours, fabrics, prints, patterns and fits came together on runways in what looked, at first glance, like a touch of madness but was really a hyper-curated scene. Trend after trend was layered on: extra-wide-legged pants with even roomier jackets, mind-bending prints and geometric patterns, metallics on top of metallics. It’s a sartorial menagerie that many designers created with the help of runway stylists, who contribute, from behind the show curtain, to the magic that is the spectacle.

It’s the season of the stylist: Here's how to master fall 2015's complicated runway looks

The trend: Goth

Juliana says: Goth has gone high-end; it’s not just for angst-ridden teens anymore. Forget plain head-to-toe black: Choose ultra-tailored pieces and mix them with bold jewellery for high impact. Details like silver fringe and grommets keep the look dark but sexy. I call it “goth glam.” READ MORE: Your definitive guide to styling a hat this season

The trend: Tweed

Juliana says: Your grandmother’s tweed has been replaced by colourful weaves – think blue, green and pink. Mixing the new brighter tweed with unexpected fabrics makes this trend unique. My favourite combination is tweed and patent – together they create a magical retro look that’s also quite modern. READ MORE: Our editors’ favourite stores to shop in Montreal

The trend: Anti-fit

Juliana says: The new anti-fit is not grungy; it’s tailored and chic. Silhouettes include longer coats and pants plus very square shapes. Pick one item that’s an anti-fit and really rock it by pairing it with classic pieces. Try exaggerated extra-long pants with a great turtleneck, and keep your hair and makeup simple.   READ MORE: These French women are giving us full-on wardrobe envy

The trend: Costume

Juliana says: The key to costume dressing is confidence. Designers have made kitsch cool with accessories, shoes and bags that add a little playfulness to any wardrobe. If you’re not as brave as costume queens Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus, pick one kitschy item, like a sweatshirt with an over-the-top print, and wear it with your favourite jeans. The trend: Mix 'n' match

Juliana says: Different patterns, textures, colours and proportions can live harmoniously together in an outfit. Here’s how to DIY: Multiple prints are okay as long as they are all on the same scale. Match one accessory (like a purse) to a colour from one of the prints. Add a neutral element; metallic shoes will do the trick. READ MORE: 10 luxe fashion items to splurge on after a bad breakup
