How to rock festival fashion in the city

Festival season may already be in full swing, but now that it's an urban affair—starting with last weekend’s Field Trip in Toronto and continuing through next week with NXNE—it's time to rethink those cutoffs and floral headpieces. We asked Toronto-based stylist Talia Brown for her tips for festival dressing in the city—because after all, you should be able to go from stage-side to street without a costume change.

Switch up your shorts story. We get it: It's hot, you want to be comfortable, you're feeling the rock 'n' roll vibe—for all those reasons and more cutoff denim shorts have become the obvious attire for music fests. But the minute you step off the grounds and onto the street you may feel a little, er, cheeky showing off that much thigh. "Aim for mid-thigh or longer," advises Brown. "It's more flattering for the legs." She also recommends ditching denim and opting for dressier fabrics, such as lace, leather or silk.

Layer up. We’ve heard it before: The key to transitional dressing is layers, and those wise words hold true for festivals, especially the outdoor variety. "But be careful not to overdo the look or you’ll get lost in your clothing," Brown says—i.e. you probably don't need your lace tank, fringe vest, kimono and moto jacket on all at once. "Keep layers clean and make sure they cut you off at flattering lengths. For an edgier look try a rocker tee, patterned denim and a biker jacket."

Put a lid on it. Sorry, friends, but the ubiquitous floral crown is officially played out. Plus, when you're in the sun all day, wouldn't you rather do your skin a favour and rock some headgear with a little coverage? According to Brown, a boho-style sunhat still achieves that easy-breezy festival attitude while looking a little more grown-up. "Or, try a baseball cap to add a fun tomboyish twist to an otherwise girl outfit." (We’re partial to urban-cool leather caps.)

Shoes wisely. Footwear might be the most important consideration when it comes to festivals in the city—and the trickiest. Brown's advice? Go for a comfortable but slightly dressy sandal. "Or even the functional Birkenstock—if you want to change into a pair of heels for an evening on the town, your Birks can easily fit into a bigger purse." Most importantly? "Dress for the weather. If it's going to rain, wear your Wellies." Hey, if it's good enough for Kate Moss....
