How I styled an accessory I never thought I’d wear

Here's how to get in on fall's hottest accessory.

If you haven't noticed, fanny packs got a major makeover this year. From the chic new name (they're called belt bags now) to a legion of super-stylish adopters (Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid are fans) this is not the cringe-inducing nylon pouch of late ’90s. When I first noticed that the accessory was trending, I was skeptical. I never would have thought I’d rock a fanny pack, but here I was, scrolling though Gucci runway photos, and eyeing the red LV x Supreme on street style stars. Turns out, they’re not the dated, though admittedly practical, carryalls of the past—they're much cooler, and still just as versatile. After all, a belt-bag is the next best thing to going purse-free. Here's how I styled three different belt bags in three different ways.

1. As an actual belt

Belt bags have been reinvented in so many ways that it’s easy to forget that they are, after all, belts. I ran this Simons number through the loops of a trench coat for a look that’s on trend and practical. Bonus: it’s the perfect way to show off a belt bag even when it’s freezing outside.

2. As a cross-body

Still hesitant to try the trend? This is the perfect trick for you: tuck a belt bag under your arm, like a snug cross-body. It’s a more unexpected way to style a belt bag, and not only is it super comfortable, it’s so 2017.

3. Wrapped around your waist

Don’t have a belt bag? You can still get in on the trend by wrapping a buckled cross-body bag around your waist for a cool, doubled effect. For maximum impact try a bold colour in contrast with a neutral look – like this millennial pink Miu Miu number, or something in fall’s It colour—red.
