Phoebe Philo’s spring collection at Celine continues to influence top designers with a utilitarian, pared-down approach to fashion. Sculpted shapes and clean lines adopt a less-is-more attitude in an array of simple, spare silhouettes.

White

Wipe the slate clean—forget the old rule about wearing white in cold weather. Sleek and sharp, white shakes up winter’s sober palette.

Hot hues

Get ready for that one exit popping with unexpected colour on every catwalk. Luscious berry-reds and fiery oranges— bordeaux, rust, vermilion, prune and persimmon—ignited the flash factor as one of the hottest trends to come.

Fur

Fierce fur flew down the runways in a mad explosion of long-haired goat, Mongolian lamb, lynx, coyote, shearling…. All made for a top-to-toe fuzzy extravaganza in everything from coats and skirts to bags and boots.

The suit

Tailored and timeless, the suit was the leading look in the collections, making it a must—with a skirt or pants—for fall. Whether it’s the DB flannel versions at Michael Kors, gold brocade at Balmain or Mad Men curves at Dolce & Gabbana, the suit is a smart investment.

The skirt

The key message? Volume. Louis Vuitton flaunted the female form in circular shapes, Michael Kors flirted with A-line versions and Yves Saint Laurent swung in trapeze styles. Length? Most hemlines fell below the knee, so play the prim card!

Classic sportswear is back! This season’s must-have topper is the basic crewneck sweater. It was updated in sweatshirt styles at Dries Van Noten, snug, cabled motifs at Aquilano.Rimondi and perforated geometric prints at Balenciaga.

Neutrals

Beige boring? Not at all! Traditional camel colourways—a paler shade of brown with a grown-up connotation—is the new black in sartorial security dressing. P.S. Grey, the other standout neutral, makes for a strong complementary hue.
