Brandon Maxwell Calls Out the Need for More Women in Fashion

The story behind the designer's best-selling dress that almost wasn't and other fashion news on Instagram you might have missed.

This week on Instagram, the designer shared the story of how the label's best-selling dress of all time almost didn't make it to the runway. Fortunately, it did and Maxwell makes the case for why fashion needs more women to call the shots.

LADIES CHOICE AT BRANDON MAXWELL

Let me tell you a little story about this dress! This was the first piece I made for my first collection almost 3 years ago. When it came time for the show fittings it was the one dress I wanted to omit from the show, for some reason that day I just waaaasn’t feeling it. But, each season the women in my office get a few dresses in the show that we call “ladies choice.” Which means that they get to choose a few dresses to absolutely put in the show whether I like it or not, because we all work equally on the collections and even though my name is on the tag, it really is a group effort and they should have their say and their moment for their favorite pieces that they love to shine. And also, they are NEVER wrong. The dresses they choose are consistently the best selling styles each season. This was the ladies choice dress from the first season (Brought to life really effortlessly and beautifully by the one and only @taylor_hill ) which I’m happy to report has gone on to become our best selling dress of all time and is still selling in stores 3 years later. We’ve seen it in every color, season after season, and this is one of the (very very many) reasons why if you are a man working in fashion you should be looking to the women you work with to make all the major decisions, and also why we need more women in fashion to be calling the shots in general! Something to think about! ❤️
