8 Sustainable Fashion Brands to Shop During Earth Month (And Beyond)
Including Canadian-made clothing labels and up-and-coming stores.
by : Lauren Knowles- Apr 8th, 2024
Completedworks, Sezane
Every year, the month of April serves as a reminder to consider what your clothes and accessories are made of, where they’re made, and how, for the betterment of the planet.
In truth, we should always be looking for ways to foster a more environmentally friendly wardrobe—but leaning into the Earth Month buzz is a great way to get you set up for the rest of the year, and long after.
From makers of eco-conscious clothing to ethically sourced footwear and jewellery, these brands design sustainable pieces you can look and feel good in.
Eliza Faulkner
Characterized by feminine silhouettes, puffed sleeves, and a playful colour palette, Montréal-made label Eliza Faulkner’s whimsical designs are crafted with the utmost care and consideration. “I started using deadstock when I saw all the amazing fabrics available locally at dealers in Montréal. There is still a pretty big garment industry here and the leftovers from bigger brands are everywhere, so I use that to produce locally and keep my supply chain very short,” shared the brand founder and designer, who lends her name to the label, in a 2022 interview with V Magazine.
Completedworks
As seen on superstars like Ashley Graham and Issa Rae, Completedworks is the maker of dainty, one-of-a-kind jewelry that’s been designed to last. Prioritizing the use of recycled materials (all gold pieces are made from recycled or Fairtrade gold, and most silver items are derived from recycled or reclaimed silver), Completedworks steers clear of transient trends and focuses on the creation of masterfully made jewelry that can be worn at any time, on anyone.
Ninety Percent
Ninety Percent is a responsibly made label offering carefully crafted apparel cut from the finest of fabrics. With a minimal-chic aesthetic you’ll never tire of, each collection uses natural, certified, and organic materials—like low-impact linen and MicroModal fabric made from renewable wood sources. What’s more, 90 percent of the label’s profits are shared between people and causes near and dear to the brand, hence its name.
Aeyde
Though the footwear and accessories house Aeyde is based in Berlin, you’ll find the words “Made in Italy” stamped on the sole of each shoe. It’s in Tuscan, family-run factories where generations of leather specialist knowledge are called upon to ensure each shoe is meticulously and responsibly produced. To help minimize its social and environmental impact, the brand uses leathers sourced from the European food industry and upcycled metals when designing its classic-meets-contemporary footwear.
Sézane
Founded in 2013, Sézane is the B Corp-certified clothing label sewing made-to-last pieces with a Parisian flair. Using 75 percent eco-friendly materials–like organic cotton and vegetable-tanned leather—across its collections, this mission-led brand is your one-stop-shop for French-inspired fashions you’ll wear time and time again.
Poppy Finch
Vancouver-based brand Poppy Finch prides itself on creating luxury jewelry with a “sustainable soul.” Whether you’re shopping for a certified recycled gold bracelet or a ring set with ethical gemstones, rest assured that master goldsmiths with decades of experience have produced each piece.
Anthropologie
For Earth Month 2024, Anthropologie has partnered up with global environmental non-profit, Kiss the Ground, to launch its very first regenerative cotton capsule collection. Inclusive of best-selling basics crafted from, you guessed it, regenerative cotton, this just-dropped collection is a celebration of the art of conscious consumption.
&Or Collective
Specializing in zero-waste clothing, Montreal-based label &Or Collective is a tech-led clothier designing durable wardrobe essentials for the eco-conscious customer. Each garment is sewn with responsibly sourced materials and crafted using a technical knitting manufacturing process that reduces the brand’s textile waste to less than one percent. In addition, &Or has teamed up with SuperCircle to offer an easy-to-use circulatory recycling program on their website.
