The It List

LG Fashion Week has come and gone, and while other show goers are still soaking their blisters and catching up on sleep, ellecanada.com has been hard at work compiling the quintessential “It list” for fall/winter 2010.

Shoulder High
Put the blame on them, carry the weight of the world or just shimmy them till dawn. That’s right, shoulders are back. There were statement shoulder pieces in fur at IZMA, VAWK by Sunny Fong and Pat McDonagh. Add to that bulbous, prehistoric shoulder silhouettes at Evan Biddell, beaded epaulets at Lucian Matis, shoulders embellished with mirrored shards of glass at Greta Constantine, studded at Pink Tartan and Victorian-inspired at Paul Hardy and there’s no denying that all eyes will be on shoulders next fall. Slouchers need not apply, so stand tall! (Not to sound like your mother or anything…)

Material Mayhem
Designers culled their materials from nature, manipulating them in ways never thought imaginable. Ever the enfant terrible of Canadian fashion, Evan Biddell used real cork to fashion unlikely pieces like shorts and a jacket, giving the material a fluidity and suppleness as to suggest a cork-printed fabric. And he accented some of them with delicate tubes of bronze. At David Dixon, a dress that consisted of an intricately woven leather bustier and organza skirt took tough chic to a whole new level. While the inaugural IZMA collection, by Izzy Camilleri and Adrian Mainella, featured gorgeous sheared jackets, shawls and capes made from sustainable Canadian furs that will surely land on must-have lists country wide next winter.

Dress It
After several seasons of skinny jeans, slouchy trousers and edgy harem pants, designers throw the notion of cold weather out the window and embrace dresses for fall. They were unstructured and chic at Comrags, pretty and printed at Andy The-Anh, vampy and flirty at Coccolily, dark and sexy at Paul Hardy, easy and sophisticated at Greta Constantine, and classic and wearable at Lundstrom. Long and short, loose and fitted, youthful and refined: clearly, the dress is the thing for fall.
