NYFW Spring 2016 diary: Chillin' out maxin' in the Big Apple

By: Madison Schill

Here's a fashion formula after my own heart: stylish stars street style photogs gorgeous spring fashion=perfect way to kick off my New York Fashion Week adventures. Here are five runway moments that caught my eye:

BCBG was all about easy, breezy dressing
With a twist, of course. Set to the melodic lull of summer serenades, models traipsed down a paneled runway in speckled knits, festival fringe and strategic layering that accentuated the female form. It was California cool and it left me feeling sunny and chill right in the heart of New York City.

Tadashi Shoji took us to paradise

The Zen-like calm continued as I settled into Shoji's show, which was inspired by a Japanese Garden. “The faint scent of a fresh rain still lingers in the air. Meandering down a moss-worn pebbled path, the serenity of a Japanese garden beckons us with the fragrance of blooming nostalgia,” read the show notes. The runway entrance was beautifully layered with Wisteria vines and lavender blooms. The same floral theme was captured on flower-embroidered tulle.

Desigual made us feel great about YOLO dressing
It was anything but chill at Desigual. The clothes were delightfully eccentric and energetic. And the accessories—septum piercings, amped-up headphones and headwear—were selfie catnip! Even the models couldn't resist taking a quick snap as they walked the runway. #techsavvyistrendy

Will you accept our rose?
For star power, I spotted sartorial sweethearts Iris Apfel, Karolina Kurkova and Laverne Cox, perched side by side at Desigual’s runway spectacle. A little farther down, we spotted #bachelornation’s reigning duo, Shawn Booth and Kaitlyn Bristowe, accompanied by BFF’s Catherine Lowe and Andi Dorfman. Before you ask, yes: they’re that cute in real life, too.

Our first model moment: Yumi Lambert

This Belgian beauty made her debut at Tadashi Shoji and she stole the show. What makes a model stand out? “The walk, certainly,” notes Hannah Dusar, one half of Belgium-based photographer duo Hannah & Joel. “But the one thing we strive to create in our images, and love seeing on runways is soul. And Yumi expresses that.”
