LG Fashion Week backstage beauty report: Gaudet, Fall 2010-11

Take this avant-garde look from the runway to the real way.

Hair
Inspired by a photo of a traditional sheep’s hair papakhi hat that Gaudet designer Gio Gaudet showed him, lead hair stylist Eric Del Monaco gave the look a high-fashion spin with using the models’ manes. He teased the entire head, crimping pieces and twisting pieces up in the back. “To tone down the look to wear it on the street, brush you hair into a ponytail and push the gathered ponytail forward to give some lift to your hair at the crown,” says del Monaco. Then, take some hair paste into the palms of your hands and with the ponytail in your palms, rub hands together as if warming them up to give your ponytail a messy-but-sexy tousled style. To finish the look? “Pull individual pieces and pin the ends in here and there.”

Makeup
The dramatic makeup at Gaudet caused a buzz backstage, and it’s easy to see why — heavy gold and black makeup covered the models’ faces, a departure from the very pretty and wearable looks we’re used to seeing at Toronto Fashion Week. “Canadian women tend to be shy with makeup, but makeup is all about having fun and feeling beautiful,” says Eddie Malter, Artistic Director for LG Fashion Week. And while this dark and edgy look at Gaudet is runway-appropriate, the good news is you can easily rein it in to wear it in real life. Focus on using gold and black to create a cat’s eye look, says Malter. Here’s how: Start with L’Oreal HiP High Intensity Pigments Metallic Shadow Duo in Gilded 806 and use it as a base over your entire eyelid. Then using the darker colour in the palette, start at the outside corner of the eye and smudge the colour towards the centre of the lid, adding a little along the lower lashline as well. Next, line your eyes all around with a black eye pencil. Then take a small brush and some black eye shadow to smudge the eyeliner into the gold shadow.
