Claudia Li's fall 2018 collection was inspired by perseverance

On day four of New York Fashion Week, this designer's collection caught our attention.

Claudia Li was in a somber mood when she was researching her fall collection (considering the times we find ourselves in, can you blame her?). Eventually the Central Saint Martins trained designer, who honed her artful eye at J.W. Anderson, stumbled upon a Turkish fairytale and let the story’s central theme—perseverance—inspire the ensuing collection. “The story is about a cursed prince who must find a silent princess,” explains Li at her presentation on a rainy day in Spring Studios. “The prince has Lala with him, which means ‘teacher’ in Turkish, who urges him to give up and return to his father.” The turning point in the story, when the prince tells his teacher “Take heart, Lala, take heart” was also the turning point for Li. “It was the moment when the light shone through.”

Even on a gloomy New York day, the light was everywhere in Li’s collection. A white shawl-collared coat dress shone with subtle sequins, the custom floral jacquard prints were delicate and painterly—like motifs from a storybook. Still, it was a fall collection, and Li’s outerwear offering struck the sweet spot between wearable and interesting. Long, wide-collared coats were finished with asymmetrical teddy fur and worn with slightly slouched, low-heel boots that came up to mid-calf. Li described this as her “most mature collection yet,” and her customer, a woman she says has grown up with her, is sure to find her own uniform fit for triumph in troubling times.
