Best: Brie Larson
Literally at a loss for words explaining why I love this dress. Let me try: the rich velvet and silhouette are a nod to Old Hollywood glam, but the neckline and hem feel so modern. I WOULD WEAR THIS EVERYDAY. – Carli Whitwell, special projects editor
Worst: Leslie Mann
Leslie Mann's Zac Posen dress felt way too Beauty and the Beast for me. It also overwhelmed her petite frame. – Carli Whitwell, special projects editor
Best: Naomie Harris
Naomie Harris' crisp white dress was Raf Simon's first red carpet moment at Calvin Klein, and oh, was it worth the wait! It felt fresh, cool and basically the opposite of old-fashioned. – Sarah Laing, culture editor
Worst: Janelle Monae
I know the Oscars are film's glitziest, most OTT night, but I just felt like the amount of sparkle, skirt, and elements going on with Janelle Monae's Elie Saab all a bit overwhelming. – Sarah Laing, culture editor
Best: Michelle Williams
When I evaluate a dress, I always factor in the hair, makeup, and styling. And Michelle Williams slayed as per usual. This two-toned Louis Vuitton felt equal parts daring and refined, with a mix of textures too. And the Williams’ hair was shorter than usual—freshly bleached and toned—her jewelry restrained and her face looked fresh from a Tata Harper facial. And the velvet halter bow framed her doll-like face in the chicest way. – Katherine Flemming, health & beauty editor
Worst: Karlie Kloss
White was a huge trend last night—which I completely support—but I do not support repeat dresses. And this dress was too close to Gwyneth Paltrow’s 2012 Tom Ford–which many people hated at the time but will forever be worshipped by me. And for someone with that kind of designer access, supermodel Karlie Kloss was in the position to take a true fashion risk—and she did not. Too soon, KK. And while I’m here, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that the bronzer isn’t doing her any favours. – Katherine Flemming, health & beauty editor
Best: Busy Philipps
The green velvet dress with the sheer detail looked amazing on the red carpet. It's a true skill to look this good without having the media think you are trying to compete/ one up with the actresses who were actually nominated. – Elaine Jyll Regio, market editor
Worst: Nicole Kidman
She plays it safe too often. – Elaine Jyll Regio, market editor
Best: Jessica Biel
There were a lot of gold dresses on the red carpet last night, some great, some puzzling. Jessica Biel's KAUFMANFRANCO number was in the former category thanks to the mesmerizing double-sided sequins. – Liz Guber, associate fashion editor
Worst: Dakota Johnson
All the reasons I loved Jessica Biel's dress (long sleeves, gold hue and a high neckline) worked against Dakota's Gucci gown. – Liz Guber, associate fashion editor
Best: Emma Stone
Gold was a big colour last night, and Emma got it right with her Givenchy gown. Her old-Hollywood hair and makeup were the perfect complement. – Ciara Rickard, production editor
Worst: Scarlett Johansson
That Alaïa dress was too voluminous for curvy Scarlett, and its glam quotient was low. The strappy shoes didn’t do her any favours either. – Ciara Rickard, production editor
