But before the World MasterCard Fashion Week events officially kick off on Monday October 21, we're getting up close with some of the Canadian designers showcasing their Spring 2014 collections this year. For fine tailoring and dashingly polished dudes, we turned to Toronto-based designer Christopher Bates, who was selected in the Mercedes-Benz Start Up Program last year (as the only menswear designer, we might add). We asked Bates for a rundown of his pre-show rituals, a preview of the collection, and how he plans to celebrate post-runway. What's your #1 ritual for the night before your runway show? "Get completely organized for my show so I can try and get as much sleep as possible." I could not survive being backstage without _________. "My super team: Hans, Julianne, Alexa, Wonjay, and the models." Describe emotions you're feeling backstage in 5 words or less. "Excited, anxious, and proud." Can you give us a little teaser to the theme of your Spring 2014 collection? "My Spring 2014 collection is inspired by the elegant, nautical lifestyle of the Riviera. It's designed for men who may, or may not, own a yacht, but certainly dress like they do." The top 10 CANADIAN FASHION DESIGNERS What are you most excited about for World MasterCard Fashion Week? "Sharing my passion with the world." Favourite spot to grab a drink after seeing a show (or your show)? "My studio with my super team." What do you have planned for the day after the show? "After the show I'll do my interviews, then go back to my studio to drop off my clothes, then I'll have some food and drinks with my team, then we'll hit my after party at Brassaii." Christopher Bates' runway show takes place on Wednesday October 23 at 4 p.m. in the studio at David Pecaut Square. Check out the full calendar of World MasterCard Fashion Week!
