Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013: At Philip Sparks & Amanda Lew Kee

Fashionable footwear at last night's Philip Sparks launch party.

Some Torontonians take their vacation time during TIFF, so they can spend the 11 days of the film festival spotting stars and watching movies. This October, the sartorially inclined could spend a full two-week vacation attending Toronto Fashion Week-related events—we're talking October 15 to 26, friends, 11 days encompassing The Collections, The Shows, official World MasterCard Fashion Week, and assorted important off-site shows. Put simply? We are in it. But! We are in it together. Stay with us over the next two weeks as we bring you our full reports—photo diaries, runway slideshows and scoop from backstage and the front row. It's the best time of year for Toronto fashion, and we're going to be everywhere.

First stop:

The season officially kicked off last night with an event at Philip Sparks's cozy Toronto shop to fete the launch of the designer's debut women's accessories line, which includes bags and the sweetest assortment of shoes, from sandals to oxfords. Philip is one of my favourite designers, and I was so excited to check out the pieces, and then to hear that the materials are all sourced here in  Toronto.

Check out this amazing bag, which also comes in yellow and red...

Doesn't it make you want to kick through the leaves down a side street and daydream about your crush in your English lit class? (Yes!) It's scholarly chic of the most stylish variety. (Look for it in-store by February.) Then it was off to Ursa on Queen West, the site of Amanda Lew Kee's private dinner and showcase of her Spring 2013 collection. It was a beautifully thought-out evening, with a six-course menu—and drinks!— crafted to match ALK's eight-piece collection. My favourite pairing? An extremely covetable minty green short suit shown with the Hemingway's Dream cocktail,  a  mix of gin, absinthe, egg white and lillet. The collection was small, lovely and extremely wearable. Stopping to chat between courses, ALK said that she'd been inspired by her time in New York rushing between appointments. The looks are all designed for the busy woman, who wants comfort, ease and a touch ALK's signature fashion-forward daring. As dinner was wrapping up, Michael Budman and Raymond Perkins, the co-founders of Roots—the Canadian stalwart which celebrates 40 years in 2013—raised their glasses and congratulated ALK on her collection. "She's the real thing," Budman said, hinting that an accessories collab might be part of the anniversary plans for next year. Hope so. Stay tuned.
