For spring, it's all about the details: at least for menswear designer Christopher Bates, whose spring/summer 2015 muse dons camo trousers and luxe Italian fabrics as he heads into next season, looking perfectly at ease in say, romantic Tuscany or on a chic safari (the collection was inspired by Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient, after all). For Bates's tenth collection, he showcased his intimate understanding of what makes men look good--in his case, that's with casually cool Italian sports jackets, or perfectly tailored in one of his signature Bond-style tuxedo jackets or two-tone dress shirts. It makes sense then that Bates will be expanding into the European market next month; he was made for this. We chatted with Bates backstage after his Spring 2015 runway presentation on Wednesday. Men in shorts, is this a challenge? "I think that shorts are a good option, obviously these are a little shorter—these guys are taller and have really long legs, but tailored shorts is a critical look. You can wear them with dress shirts, and I recommend wearing them with dress shoes--that can really help with the look. It makes you look put together, even though you’re casual and comfortable."

How have you grown here at WMCFW? "I think it's really important for a designer to have a signature and an aesthetic that's identifiable and for me, it evolves over time. It doesn't change dramatically from season to season, I'm not jumping all over the place, or following trends for the sake of, I have my look and I'm just going to keep augmenting it." And you have your kiss-on-the collar shirt! "It's my best seller." I hear you're heading to Milan. "I'm opening up an office there on November 1, so I'll be doing production in Italy and I've hired a European sales director, who's Italian, and I'm going to work closely with him to expand my business in Europe. But I'll be back and forth." Phew. READ MORE: Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2015: It’s a Mediterranean mood for Day 2 Joe Fresh Spring 2015: A fashion party and Solange Knowles. NBD.
