Photos by Jenna Marie Wakani.It’s a good time be Sid Neigum right now—his spring 2015 collection –a feat of modular origami—has been picked up by Hudson Bay’s The Room and Toronto’s Jonathan + Olivia. And, straight off the tradeshows is Paris, Neigum just sold to a few new stores in Paris and possibly one in Shanghai. But in Sid time—the measure by which we track this designer’s acceleration rate—that’s old news. For his Fall 2015 collection, which debuted last night at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto as part of his Mercedes-Benz Start Up win, Neigum had a few tricks up his always-black sleeve. You guys, he made this look on the day of his show.“I made three looks today,” Neigum shares backstage in his typically modest and offhand way. Say what? “I look at the collection and see what’s missing.” He then gets to work filling in any noticeable gaps in the collection. “I haven’t been able to make anything because I was in Paris and then Mexico for a friend’s wedding. And so I got a few ideas and I sketched them out, cut them this morning and sewed them during the day.” He points to a billowing white dress that’s intricately folded and wrapped around the model standing next to him. Yup—freshly made that day.
“The finale dress was made today, too,” he adds about the sculptural showpiece made of metal bonded between two layers of fabric. The aluminum foil spilling out of the seams at the neckline gives the look a superhero edge—understated yet undeterred, kind of like our hero, Sid.
