Paris Fashion Week Diary: Backstage at Vivienne Westwood

Runway photos courtesy of ImaxTree.com. The security to get backstage at Vivienne Westwood’s Paris show was rather intense. But that’s what happens when a fabulous fashion spectacle is staged at the British Ambassador’s Residence on Embassy Row. Once I made it through the gauntlet of buff, tall MI5-looking men, I entered the fashion tent in the spacious backyard where Westwood’s inventive, quirky world was taking shape.

Makeup is never a simple, scaled-back affair with this British designer. “It’s about playtime,” makeup artist Val Garland explained to me, while she was painting the outline of a heart onto a model's face. “It’s a little bit Marie Antoinette. Basically, it’s about putting all the makeup ideas into a bag, juggling them all up and seeing what comes out. It’s about playtime. Theatre!”

It took a “village” of stylists to create the OTT hair looks. At one point I counted six sets of hands madly working on creating the halo curls that framed some of the girls' faces. Sam McKnight designed the looks for the show based on the global exotic theme of the collection. The first style was more masculine—a little rockabilly. They used Pantene Pro-V Normal-Thick Flowing Body Mousse to get texture on the sides and Pantene Pro-V Aqua Light Weightless Conditioning Shake for a little shine. The other style—the show-stopper—was inspired to complement the Velázquez-like clothes. They first created texture using Pantene Pro-V Normal-Thick Flowing Body Mousse and then painstakingly did figure-of-eight braiding over the head. To set it quickly, they clamped it with a flatiron. To finish, they took a soft-bristle brush and gently opened the braids into this dramatic cloud of hair.

 Definitely not a DIY look.
