London Fashion Week Fall 2013: Free food!—if you have time to eat it—plus a look at the yummy media lounge

There’s lots of free food to be found at London Fashion Week—if you have time to eat it while running between back-to-back shows.  My first stop was the VIP media lounge at Somerset House, the home of London Fashion Week. It’s a little tricky to find—behind a white wall and velvet rope in the main show space—but once you enter, you feel like you’ve arrived in a cozy, modern forest. There’s a whitewashed fireplace (showcasing a whimsical tree with little birds), a backlit wall of painted trees, and bookcases filled with knickknacks like silver rabbit figurines (I’ve included some photos at the end).
Most importantly though, there is free food. Sadly, I missed the media lunch (I’m told it was a mix of salads and grilled veggies) but arrived in time for the afternoon snack. So, my lunch for the day? A mini carrot cake, two macarons, tea and freshly squeezed apple juice. Plus several handfuls of crunchy bar mix.
I also munched on the free bags of gourmet popcorn that are constantly being handed out at the main venue—they can't be avoided. And since it's "under 100 calories" a bag, the fashion crowd can actually be seen eating it! (Plus, it's a much yummier choice than the fibre/granola/breakfast bars which have become ubiquitous at NYFW and Toronto Fashion Week...) This bag is a sour cream and chive flavour, but I prefer the sea salt. Still on the lookout for the sweet chili version. I go for the orange (Vitamin C and calcium) as I always seem to be fighting off a cold after being on a plane. (And the phone recharging stations at Somerset House were the coolest thing ever. Take note every other fashion week!!) The next day, I had breakfast at the Mulberry show, which is know for fab food. There were two kinds of juices on offer, but I’m not even sure what the red one was, because they had me at apple-elderflower. Mulberry was also serving several flavours of savoury muffins, which looked delish. But cutlery was required, and I was already juggling a tote bag, a coat, a phone, and invite, and a drink…. I still regret not having a taste. Post-show, I did indulge in a Mulberry chocolate ladybug. Mmmm. I was super thirsty by the time I arrived at Vivienne Westwood, and on my way into the show, someone thrust a bottle of fresh juice into my hand. The juice was orange-coloured. “Do you want to trade?” a fellow editor asked, eyeing my bottle. “I prefer the fruitier ones.” I took one look at her green juice concoction and shook my head. Sadly, it was the wrong choice. Her cucumber drink turned out to be quite refreshing. On closer inspection, mine turned out to be the “spicy lemonade” red-chili cleanse drink that is popular with some celebs. It was very bitter. I only took one sip. Thankfully, later that day, there were delicious orange drinks at the Topshop Unique show. I’m not sure what it was, but I downed two—one pre and one post-show. I also grabbed two takeaway salads on my way out of Topshop. Sadly, after a couple hours, they were still in my bag….so I never got a chance to try them. Even sadder, I did not get an invite to the L’Wren Scott show, where editors were served shepherd's pie and salad (at tables!) during her runway presentation. But the next morning, I did find a Topshop tart in the bottom of my bag. It made for a yummy breakfast while writing this post! Now here's a quick look at the VIP media area at Somerset House:

The backlit dining area.

The cute fireplace.

One of the quirky bookcases.

And...my favourite thing in the whole media centre: Glass coffee tables with live succulent plants. I want one!!
