For Todd Lynn, “new” is so...last millennium.2. The fur: “That's made from fisher, part of the sable family. Fisher is not normally used all over; it’s typically used for a collar. It’s not as long as a fox and not so short, like a mink. I’ve come to think of it as kind of like a weird fox!” What about those who rally against fur wearers? “Fur is my heritage—Canada was built on fur,” says Lynn. “It doesn't have to be cruel. I use the best product from the best places. Besides, anybody who has worn fur, especially in places like Canada and Russia, knows there is no warmer material.” When it comes to handling requests from celebrities, Lynn always lets the stylists know if the designs have fur, but he says the stylists just say “It’s okay, we’ll say it’s fake." The fabrics: “I don’t work with prints,” says Lynn. “That’s not a bad thing, because I think London is overdosed on prints. I don’t think anyone needs another print collection. My approach was to add texture, like with this jacquard, which has the threads cut in behind to create detail,” he explains. “It’s quite a couture technique. The inspiration: “I’m obviously inspired by art, what I see on the street and music. These are what spur me on. There’s an artist from Norway, Odd Nerdrum, who paints in a renaissance style,” he continues. “That is where his colours come from, but he is still alive today and his paintings are beautiful because they are modern. The idea that in fashion we are always chasing the new is kind of a negative aspect of what we do. Sometimes the new isn’t so great." “It’s weird, as a Canadian,” says the London-based designer, who grew up in small-town Ontario. “I remember when I was a kid and everyone would be like, ‘Oh, look at this, it’s 100 years old!' In Europe it’s like, ‘Oh, look, it’s 1,000 years old.’ It’s a whole different ball game on that level.”That ethos informs his current showcase, on display at the London Showroom during Paris Fashion Week. Lynn spent some time with me, reviewing his collection and talking about his fashion, his furs, his fabrics and the inspiration he finds in the works of a Norwegian artist. 1. The Dress: Lynn worked on this in collaboration with London jewellery designer Shaun Leane. “Shaun is the jewellery designer who started working with Alexander McQueen. All those showpieces—he did them. This is actually very light. It’s nylon, done with a 3-D printer, and then it’s metallized after.
