Fall accessories preview
TREND #1: From the top -- hats
Who did it best: Marc Jacobs, who else? With bright colour combos and striking shapes, MJ topped off almost every look with a gorgeous hat.
Runner up: Proenza Schouler's black cloche was dark and demure at its best.
How to wear them: Face shape and the law of opposites are the deciding factors in finding a hat that suits you: the most flattering hat styles will contrast with your face shape. For example, if you have a round-shaped face, pick a hat that will create angles, such as a fedora. If you have a square-shaped face, choose something rounder like a cloche.
TREND #2: Statement jewels -- jewellery
Who did it best: Lanvin. Oversize, opaque creations gave a modern makeover to a Granny favourite: floral brooches.
Runner up: Larger-than-life jewels arranged in bib-style necklaces at Dior.
How to wear it: Slip on one bold item and let it be to focal point of your outfit. With jewelry this striking, it's best to keep your clothing simple and understated.
TREND #3: Tie one on -- scarves and wraps
Who did it best: Balenciaga. Flea market finds (think globally inspired colours, patterns and textures) have never looked so chic.
Runner up: For evening, a short cape of large ruffles from Giambattista Valli adds an elegant touch.
How to wear it: Wrap and go! The chicest way to wear a scarf isn't long and loose; instead cocoon your neck and shoulders for a high-collared effect.
TREND #4: Glove love -- gloves
Who did it best: Karl Lagerfeld. Loved the unexpected hot pink and bright blue hues almost as much as the absent fingertips -- what better way to flaunt your new mani?
Runner up: Too many to choose! There really was everything from futuristic to ultra-feminine: Burberry dressed the urban warrior in quilted elbow length gloves, while Galliano gave ladies in waiting delicate crystal beaded ones.
How to wear them: There are no hard and fast glove rules. Bright colours or shiny patent work equally well during day or night, so go ahead and mix it up. Choose coordinating tones of gloves, hat and scarves -- nothing obviously matched looks best.

Who did it best: Fendi. The recipe for the "it' bag this season is all about mixing textures and Fendi offered a delicious blend of woven leather, fur and feathers in both oversize day bags and clutches.
Runner up: Jil Sander's sleek croc envelope clutch.
How to wear it: For day, the big bag still reigns supreme. When evening rolls around, an oversize clutch is best. Even if black is still your go-to colour, look for textures, like woven leather, and hardware to add interest.
TREND #6: Get a leg up -- hoisery
Who did it best: John Galliano. Thick ribbed tights in juicy harvest shades added a playful touch as they peeked out from Galliano's gowns.
Runner up: Black footless tights still look chic, especially when worn pulled down low to cover the foot a la Marni.
How to wear it: Show off great gams using coloured or patterned hosiery to dress up a simple black mini skirt or dress. If black tights are still as far as you're willing to go, look for a pair with a bit of texture like a wide rib or cable knit pattern.
TREND #7: It's a cinch -- belts
Who did it best: It's a tie between Balenciaga and Burberry. At both shows, the black belt got a dominatrix-like edge thanks to multiple, can't-miss-me buckles.
Runner up: Peter Som slashed the waists of his models with double-banded, skinny belts in neon colours.
How to wear it: Belts are the quickest way to define your silhouette and transform any shape into hourglass perfection. Wear them over anything from coats to sweaters, jackets to dresses and at your natural waist, not on your hips.
TREND #8: Shake your bootie -- footwear
Who did it best: Yves Saint Laurent. The season's hottest shoe shape (the bootie) looks the most modern with a sculpted wooden heel, lace up front and patent cap toe.
Runner up: Stella McCartney. This sleek heel is part sock, part platform and all sex appeal.
How to wear it: A sky-high heel is the best way to show off all the fabulous hosiery you'll be wearing. Booties with a thicker heel are also the perfect pairing to this season's wide-leg pant.
