A report in Psychology of Women Quarterly recently revealed that women who practise yoga are at the lowest risk of developing disordered eating and have higher body-image satisfaction. Meanwhile, a recent study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association shows that those who practise yoga are less likely to gain weight over the course of a 10-year period compared to those who do not, apparently because yoga build mindfulness, which helps to foster better nutritional decisions, curb emotional eating and bolster body image. Shop green Where our mothers simply factored price and comfort into their shopping decisions, we have to consider ethical manufacturing standards, safe ingredients, recyclable packaging and geographical provenance. Ask yourself: Where did it come from? The locavore movement is all the rage in food circles, but the same principle - reducing a product's environmental footprint by lowering the amount of emissions required to transport it to you - applies to any purchase. How was it made? Look for the Fairtrade certification (look for the symbol, not just the words).
