Cottage style: Update your weekend getaway basics with a shot (or two!) of summer style.

A cottage-inspired runway look from Michael Kors's Spring/Summer 2012 show.

Story by Chloé Berge

Nothing is more relaxing than a weekend at your cottage or cabin, but some of us tend to be a bit too relaxed (read: sloppy) when we hit the dock. Go from disheveled to dynamite with these expert fashion tips from Nicole Manek, a Toronto stylist with Judy Inc. Expert fashion tip: GIVE YOUR FLIP-FLOPS A REST In lieu of ultra casual rubber flip-flops, try a metallic sandal and add a little bling to your natural surroundings, says Manek. Choose a metallic that suits your skin tone - rose gold is universally flattering - and wear them with a crisp white sundress. Expert fashion tip: THINK OUTSIDE THE TANK TOP BOX Instead of pairing your cut-offs with a tank top, try a fitted or short caftan. Manek suggests choosing one that’s lightweight and fitted enough to show your shape but still comfortable. Stay away from sheer fabrics so that it can do double duty as a dress and beach cover-up. Expert fashion tip: LEAVE THE HOODIE AT THE GYM Instead of an athletic hoodie, opt for an extra long sweater with a built-in belt, suggests Manek. You can throw it on over a sundress or jeans and a tee. Bonus: You won’t need a blanket around the fire pit! Expert fashion tip: SAY NO TO WET PONYTAILS! "When you get out of the water, spritz a little beach spray in your hair to create natural waves and throw on an oversized sun hat," explains Manek. A printed headscarf is also a chic yet casual way to keep your hair out of your face and look instantly put together. Expert fashion tip: DON’T FORGET TO ACCESSORIZE Leave your watch at home, but layer a few mixed metal chain necklaces that can move easily from the water to the dock and back again. "I like to do one thin gold chain, a thicker, longer silver one and one in rose gold," says Manek. A statement necklace with a beachy, organic feel also works–like Canadian designer Regal & Granger’s fun three strand dyed rope necklace.
