It’s 7 a.m. in Toronto and a pyjama-clad Mark McMorris is eating an egg-white omelette in a great room at the Ritz. It has been less than 48 hours since the Regina bronze medallist arrived back from the Sochi slopes, and he has hit the talk-show circuit with the same drive that he displays on the mountain. This morning, though, instead of talking about powder and perseverance, he’s musing about snowboarding style.
How would you describe your personal style? “It’s laid-back for a city person, but I don’t dress like a slob. If you can avoid being the person where it’s like, ‘That’s a snowboarder for sure,’ that’s a good thing.”
Whose fashion sense do you admire? “It’s funny how in hip hop everyone wears super-over-the-top clothes, and then Drake wears suits all the time. I think that’s so sick.”
Do you have a piece of clothing that you always wear? “For the three contests I’ve done this year, I’ve worn green camo underwear on the day. I didn’t think I was superstitious until I got to the Olympics. I looked at my underwear that day and I was like, ‘Fuck, I have to wear these.’”
Your medal is like the ultimate accessory. “It’s the only chain that a rapper can’t buy. [Laughs] I can’t really wear it—it’s like five pounds—but I try to keep it on my person as much as possible.”
