The 2024 Met Gala theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” was announced late last year. The annual event is widely agreed to be the most spectacular red carpet of the year as guests try to outdo each other in capturing the theme of the Costume Institute’s exhibition at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art (for better or worse).

Each gala has a committee of co-chairs that includes Anna Wintour and a line up of A-list celebrities and Vogue just announced the 2024 hosts. Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Zendaya will be joined by honorary co-chairs Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.

The dress code was also announced today: the garden of time.

The dress code and the theme are meant to inform the guests bold fashion decisions and each year celebrities rise to the occasion with varying degrees of success. Some have been criticized in the past for failing to pay attention to the theme.

This year’s co-chairs were chosen based on their histories with the Met Gala. Zendaya for instance has attended the gala five times and each year proves to be a standout fan favourite who fully commits to the theme. We all remember her light up Cinderella dress from 2019.

This year will be Bad Bunny’s third Met Gala (he stunned in a backless Jacquemus suit last year) and Chris Hemsworth’s first time on the museum steps red carpet.

Jo-Lo has attended the gala 13 times and according to Vogue’s announcement was chosen for her mastery of the “art of delivering statement looks.”

The Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute Andrew Bolton tells Vogue that this year’s exhibition  of the upcoming exhibition, “is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion. One thing I hope this show will activate is that sensorial appreciation of fashion.”

The exhibition will showcase approximately 250 items rarely seen in public. Some are so delicate that elements of AI and CGI to display them which we can hopefully expect to see reflected in the celebrity looks as well.
