I've never had a facial done before or seen a dermatologist, but now that I am in my mid-20s I feel like I should. What do you recommend to start with procedure-wise?

Facials are a great way to reveal younger, smoother skin. For a first-time facial we asked Toronto-based dermatologist Dr. Benjamin Barankin for his advice.

There are many issues to consider as far as managing your skin, including your age, skin type and skin sensitivities, time of year/season, etc. I would start with the expert consultation of a dermatologist who can review your skin, and set up a preventative program to keep your skin supple, young and healthy looking. Various issues such as cleansers, moisturizer, and sunscreens will be discussed, as well as medicated creams such as vitamin A cream. Depending on the condition of your skin, other options such as laser, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion may be options for you. As well, we are now doing much more preventative BOTOX treatments to prevent the lines of the forehead and around the eyes from etching in. Lots to talk about, so see your dermatologist to get on a great skin care routine; your routine will change as you age, so always worth checking in periodically with your skin doctor.
