How do you do a real smoky eye?

Smoky eyes are the hot thing this fall, so for this question I went to Annesley Broadhead, National Makeup Artist at CARGO cosmetics, to learn how to achieve this look.
Creating a real smoky eye takes a bit of practice but if you follow these
steps the results will be amazing. I like to break with tradition when
doing this look and begin your make-up with your eyes instead of your base
make-up. This enables you to clean-up make-up droppings from under the eye
area without disturbing your base make-up. When creating a smoky eye, three shadows are usually applied with the lightest being placed directly under the eye brow, the medium shade in the crease and the darkest shade on the lid and under the lower lash line. When choosing your three shades keep in mind that they should be fairly neutral and that a smoky eye usually works best with shades of grey, black, brown or deep purple. - Begin by priming the lids with a soft vanilla shade or your lightest
shade.
- Next smudge the deepest eye shadow shade under the lower lash line,
extending the color just past the outer corners. This will give you a
perfect guideline for placing the upper, outer corner color.
- Now using the same shade define the outer corner of the eyes, blending in
towards the centre of the eye and up towards the crease. For a very intense look apply the color over the entire lid and further into the crease. Build color slowly to avoid messes and a heavy handed look.
- Add your medium shade of shadow eye shadow into your crease to create
definition and to soften the line between the lid color and the crease.
- Give lift and highlight under the brow and on the inner corners with the
lightest eye shadow shade. CARGO EyeLighter™ also makes a great option for highlighting in either matte or shimmer, depending on the look you are

- Line your eyes with the CARGO SmokyEye Eye Liner Duo. Using the cream side of the duo line along the upper lash line. Line along the lower lash line for added intensity. Smudge out and set with the powder side for long wear.
- If you are creating a very sultry look you can line the inner rims of the eyes with a black eye pencil.
- The smoky eye look is never complete without at least two coats of black
mascara.
- To balance your smoky eyes keep your foundation matte or semi matte, keep
your cheeks soft and neutral and lips sheer or nude. |
