Miss Chic

Miss Chic
I'm a youthful 48, 5'2" and 122 lbs with a round shape (large breasts, heavy ribcage/waist, no butt at all). I'm looking for a professional alternative to suits. I'd like to lean toward nice knits. Can you offer any label or style suggestions?
As more and more workplaces lean toward casual, we're all looking for professional-looking clothing that's also stylish. I asked Susan Langdon, executive director of the Toronto Fashion Incubator, for advice on your question. Here's what she had to say.
"Without knowing more about your line of work, I’ll assume you mean 'corporate' or 'businesslike' when you say 'professional.' If this is the case, then my word of advice is to be very, very careful when selecting knits. Avoid anything that’s clingy, tight and either too thin or too bulky. Be sure panty and bra lines don’t show through or worse, nipples! You can’t be taken seriously at a board meeting if you don’t look the part.
"Tailored, long- or 3/4-sleeved shirtdresses in a crisp woven might be a nice option to consider before making the leap to knits; they give a clean, slimming line and are more feminine than a suit. But if your heart is set on knits, go for something simple, chic and streamlined that skims (not hugs) the body. Canadian designer Lida Baday has the market covered in this area and for lots of great reasons. Her jersey is the perfect weight to wear 24/7, the styles are timeless, and best yet -- her blacks match season to season. So if you invest in a pair of black jersey pants for spring, they’ll match a black jersey top next fall."
