I am 29 years old, petite and just under five feet tall. How can I dress professional without looking like a child playing dress-up?
Most of us think we'd like to look younger, but in reality, we want to be taken seriously -- and that's much harder when you're petite. I asked stylist Marlene Shiff, owner of Toronto shop Boutique Le Trou, for advice for our less-than-tall ELLE readers. She says:
"Remember, good things come in small packages.
"If you can get away with not wearing a suit, separates can be your answer. There’s freedom in separates because you have numerous options.
"Get a classic bottom, such as a great pant. Not too forward, not too conservative. Contemporary. Then you can add a great blouse or embellished T-shirt and a shawl with a vintage or modern brooch. Or skip the shawl. Just add the season’s jewellery to the look and you’re there.
"In winter, a great sweater or sweater set and some metal jewellery, perhaps with jewel stones to offset the colour, but try to remain within a similar palette all the way through as that will lengthen the silhouette.
"The same applies for a skirt. Not too short, not too long, to act as your background while you punctuate the look with great tops. You can change the look often with a solid skirt and pant as your base.
"Again, if you can stay away from dresses and suits, you won’t look like a child dressing up."
