What kind of skin regimen should you use if you have very dry and acne-prone skin?
Finding the right products for your skin can take a lifetime -- especially as skin changes as you age. So for tips for this ELLE reader, I went to Jodi Stableford, spa education specialist at Civello. She says:
"In order to rid your skin of acne you should consider the possible causes. Simple changes to your diet, skin-care regime, stress levels, or exercise could reduce your acne. It's important to use gentle products on acne-prone skin. Many people resort to harsh cleansers to treat acne in an attempt to dry the oil in the skin. However, when the skin becomes dehydrated your body will attempt to restore moisture by producing more sebum or oil and this will result in continued breakouts.
"Use a lightweight cleanser, like Aveda's All-Sensitive Cleanser, to calm your skin. A gentle cleanser will not irritate inflamed acne and won't strip necessary moisture from the skin. Next, target your acne by exfoliating with a liquid exfoliant, like Aveda's Botanical Kinetics Exfoliant, to remove dead skin cells on the surface and penetrate the pores to release oil, dirt, and bacteria build-up. Look for advanced ingredients like salicylic acid, which is gentle yet effective, and avoid abrasive scrubs. Finally, acne-prone skin must be properly hydrated with a lightweight or oil-free moisturizer such as Aveda's Tourmaline Protecting Lotion. When the skin is treated gently and is well hydrated, your oil glands will slowly begin to produce less sebum and your acne will be reduced."
