Miss Blush
What is the best way to take care of a dry, sensitive scalp. I use a straightening iron often and I condition my hair. Head and Shoulders shampoo does not work on my scalp.
We turned to Dr. Benjamin Barankin, a Toronto dermatologist at Cosmetic Dermatology on Bloor.
It would be worthwhile to have a dermatologist assess your scalp for seborrheic dermatitis or other scalp condition. In general, shampoos containing tar such as Neutrogena T-gel or polytar can be quite effective in treating dry and sensitive scalp, as well as itchy and flaky scalps. A shampoo with selenium sulfide (e.g. Selsun) or one containing ketoconazole (e.g. Nizoral) can also be beneficial. Its worth a trial of each shampoo for two weeks to see which works best for you.
With all therapeutic shampoos, make sure to leave them in a few minutes before washing them out. If your scalp doesn’t respond to these over-the-counter treatments, your dermatologist can assess your scalp and prescribe an effective shampoo and/or lotion.
